Understand the result

How it is calculated

One-off costs = setup + equipment + software + marketing + insurance + opening inventory. Working capital = monthly operating costs × months funded. Contingency = (one-off costs + working capital) × contingency percentage. Total funding = all three amounts.

A worked example

£2,750 of one-off costs plus £800 a month for 3 months gives £5,150. A 10% contingency adds £515, making the funding target £5,665.

Common questions

How much working capital should I allow?

Test several periods based on payment terms, seasonality and how long it may take to win customers. Three months is an editable example, not a recommendation.

Should I include VAT?

Use a consistent cash basis. If VAT is a cost you cannot recover, include it. If you can recover it, consider the timing of the cash outflow and reclaim separately.
