Understand the result

How it is calculated

Annual revenue target = annual income before personal tax + annual business expenses. Billable hours = working weeks × billable hours per week. Hourly rate = revenue target ÷ billable hours. Day rate = hourly rate × billable hours per day.

A worked example

A £36,000 pre-tax income goal plus £6,000 expenses requires £42,000 revenue. Across 46 weeks and 25 billable hours a week, that is £36.52 an hour, or £255.65 for a 7-hour billable day.

Common questions

Should I enter all the hours I work?

Enter only hours you expect to invoice. A 40-hour working week may contain substantially fewer billable hours.

How do I include tax?

Choose a pre-tax income target with help from an accountant or an appropriate tax calculation. No flat percentage here can estimate your individual tax liability.
