How it is calculated
Contribution per unit = selling price − variable cost. Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution, rounded up to whole units. Theoretical break-even revenue = unrounded units × selling price.
A worked example
At £1,500 monthly fixed costs, £50 selling price and £20 variable cost, each sale contributes £30. Break-even is 50 units and £2,500 revenue per month.
Common questions
Why are units rounded up?
You normally cannot sell part of a unit. The revenue figure uses the exact mathematical threshold; rounded units may generate slightly more revenue.
Does break-even include my pay?
Only if you include it in costs. Add the cost of your work deliberately; otherwise the business may cover its bills without paying you.
